Shadow has a good chance of recovery
Heather and Jonathan Brinker are certified animal lovers. They share their home with three rescued dogs and work regularly with an animal rescue group.
So when they saw a dog be hit by a car, there was no question they would help. “It’s the right thing to do,” said Jonathan.
Heather first spotted the black lab in a ditch along Interstate 77 in North Carolina. She called her husband, who left a meeting at work and arrived at the spot in time to see the dog run into traffic and be struck by a car.
The dog, despite her injuries, dragged herself onto the median. Jonathan darted through traffic to reach her.
Hurt and scared, the dog bit him, but Jonathan held on and got her back across the freeway. He and Heather took her to a nearby animal hospital, where she was stabilized, and then to Carolina Vet Specialists for surgery on her crushed pelvis.
Dr. Jason Balara said that the dog, whom Heather has named Shadow, has a good chance of a complete recovery. She’ll need physical therapy to learn to walk again, but is already trying to walk, a good sign.
For now, Shadow is home with the Brinkers, recovering. Despite her ordeal, she is a sweet, friendly dog, they say. Since they already have three dogs, the Brinkers would like to find Shadow a forever home where she can get lots of attention, in a good situation with a fenced yard.
Shadow’s care so far has cost more than $6,400, and the physical therapy will cost more. Other members of Friends of the Animals, the rescue group the Brinkers work with, has helped defray the expense, and other donations have come in, but more is still needed.
If you would like to donate to help Shadow, you can do so at the Friends of the Animals website: http://friendsoftheanimals.net. Or you can call Carolina Vet Specialists at 704-949-1100.
