When you think of dog sled racing, do you think of Oregon? Me neither. But northeastern Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains are home to the Eagle Cap Extreme Dog Sled Race, which is currently underway — and competing for the $1,000 prize are Steven Mullen and his daughter, Brandi.
“She’s totally capable of beating me,” says Mullen, “and she weighs 60 pounds less than me.” Brandi ran her first dog sled race at age 4; she’s now 18, and the 100-mile Eagle Cap is her longest race yet.
The Mullens may cross the finish line together … or Brandi may decide to go for it and try to outrun her dad and the other mushers in the race.
But no matter what happens, Brandi will always be grateful for the time her father rescued her from that angry moose.
