Steve Markwell didn’t set out to be a specialist in rehabilitating dogs no one else can handle. He just always had a thing for animals. Growing up, he rescued rabbits and had a closet full of reptiles and amphibians that his mother didn’t know about.

But now he gets calls from shelters all over the country to take the dogs they can’t keep or won’t even accept: the face-biters, cat-killers, pit bulls and guard dogs.

“When people create these monsters, I think it’s people’s responsibility to take care of them. Not to just kill everything because it’s inconvenient,” he says.

After college, Markwell worked for a while on a horse ranch and gradually got interested in animal rescue. He started with a few dogs he came across. When his house got too small, he sold it and bought an industrial facility that he’s already outgrown.

Over 50 animals currently live at the facility, and Markwell is trying to raise $500,000 so he can move to a larger location.

You’re a good guy, Steve Markwell. I hope you get the funds you need to keep doing what you’re doing.
