Dog trainer Gregg Flowers explains how vital it is to use the proper tone of voice with your dog:
A common mistake we dog owners often make is talking to dogs like they’re little people … Often when we talk to children, for example, it may actually be effective to say something “like we mean it,” by using a stern, more serious tone of voice to get our point across. When you use that tone with a dog, though, he just thinks he’s in trouble. … It makes a lot more sense to use the upbeat, encouraging tone for “come!” and if Fluffy ignores you, then use a corrective, “No.”
Flowers also addresses the common mistake of repeating commands.
